Boys’ Day at La Redoute
in Bonn-Bad Godesberg

On 26 April it was Boys' Day, and two boys gained exciting insights behind the scenes of La Redoute in Bonn-Bad Godesberg.

The nationwide action day is intended to give boys insights into the professional world and offers the opportunity to get to know people and their work intensively for a day and to ask practical questions directly. https://www.boys-day.de

We had two applications from Paul (13 years old) and Simon (11 years old).
Her day began with a welcome and a tour of the house by Christoph von Borries personally, combined with a crash course in history in the electoral ballroom.

„Elector Max Franz, Marie-Antoinette – his sister: Ah! She was beheaded, and she was still partying here?! Cracking.“ „Adenauer held his receptions here? I still remember him! Schmidt, no.“ „The Queen was here, how cool. Why does she always wear that sort of thing on her head, hats and that?“ „Lady Di eating here in Bad Godesberg at the Redoute – my mum really likes her. And now I'm here, brilliant.“

The lads were impressed and walked thoughtfully through the Beethoven Hall: „so Beethoven was auditioned here, like on Pop Idol“, not quite, but that’s probably how a teenager in 2018 might imagine the young composer’s audition back then before Joseph Haydn and the Elector in the Redoute.

Then the work began for the two of them. First in the banqueting office alongside our Junior Event Manager Nathalie Klinkhammels. Creating proposals and planning events from the initial telephone enquiry to the actual event in the Redoute – whether a conference, birthday or wedding – was worked through using practical examples.

After creating a function sheet (an event schedule), our two young employees headed with it to the Beethoven Hall to set up the evening's event.

A higher education institution celebrates the graduation of its alumni with a ceremony and presentation of certificates in the glamorous banqueting hall.

Set up chairs according to the plan – straight and counted out – the lectern, tables, decoration… everything has to be in its place and everything is supposed to look perfect. „After all, it's going to be a lovely celebration,“ Paul commented, understanding Nathalie Klinkhammel's demand for precision.

Now was the time to meet all the staff: lunchtime. Thanks to the great weather, lunch was served on the garden terrace for the banquet, service, kitchen, housekeeping, gardening and our intern teams, with a view of the Redoutenpark.

Then it was off to the kitchen to wash hands – and away we went.
Head chef Matthias Pietsch took the two of them under his wing and, of course, „peeling potatoes“ was one of the first tasks. „I've never done that before, Grandma will be proud when I tell her that.“ We were too, both of them did a great job.

Labour of love

Quickly shedding their aprons, Paul and Simon now accompanied the event manager on a site visit. A young bridal couple had come to look at the Pink Salon for their civil wedding ceremony and the Green Salon for the wedding reception. „Women ask a lot more than men, it's just like at school,“ Simon remarked with a smile.

After that it was time to knock off for our two interns and even though it was already late afternoon, they didn't really want to leave at all.
„It was really fun“ and „the variety was great; working in a team, behind the scenes, and also “with the guest' is very exciting and versatile".
