the architect was Martin Leydel. It was intended to be used for balls and other court entertainments \u2013 the name \u201eRedoute\u201c is an old term for a masquerade ball. The originally three-winged building was later extended with the addition of the oval garden hall between the two wings. There they agreed that Beethoven should undertake a second study trip to Vienna to become a master pupil of Haydn. In 1793, a performance of The Magic Flute took place here (world premiere in 1791 in Vienna). In 1794, Bonn was occupied by the French. Cultural events in the Redoute came to an end; until it was banned by the Prussian government in 1819, it was used for gambling. In the following decades, the Redoute was used as a picture gallery and a girls\u201e boarding school until it was acquired in 1853 by the family of Wilhelm Ludwig Deichmann. From his hands, it passed in 1856 through sale into the private ownership of the Cologne banker Victor Wendelstadt (1819\u20131884), who was a friend of his. Until the Wendelstadt couple moved into the house in May 1857, some conversion work took place, in the course of which the rococo grille from the garden of the Jesuit college \u201cTricoronatum\u201e\u2014which had previously been demolished for the new Cologne central station\u2014was also installed. The garden of the Redoute was enlarged by adding that of the neighbouring \u201cCount von Schladen House\" and was redesigned by the Cologne landscape gardener Konrad Wilhelm Nelle and equipped with greenhouses. In 1879, a covered bowling alley including an entrance pavilion was built in the garden, and in 1882 a tea house in its upper part. Following Wendelstadt's death, interior alterations to the Redoute took place in 1884. The property remained in the family's possession and was used as a summer residence by Viktor Wendelstadt's son Richard (1857\u20131918) until the beginning of the First World style=\"text-align: center;\">After the outbreak of war, Richard Wendelstadt set up a military hospital on the upper floor of the house, which was medically supervised by the doctor Hermann Wendelstadt (1862\u20131928), a brother of Richard's. Following Richard's death, Hermann Wendelstadt sold the Redoute on 22 January 1920, including the 25-morgen garden, for 1.15 million marks to the municipality of Godesberg, which wanted to use it again as a spa hotel for holding cultural events. Some valuable furnishings remained in the possession of the Wendelstadt family and were transferred to the Viktorsh\u00f6he.<br \/>\nIn 1925, the municipality of Godesberg had the Redoute extended with a garden hall for its new use, based on plans by local architect Walter B\u00fchling (1887\u20131955) and under the overall supervision of provincial conservator Edmund Renard.
